Selosse’s lieu-dit, or single parcel, range stems from belief that site is the most important determinant of wine quality. Since the mid-2000’s, Anselme Selosse began testing that theory by releasing 6 lieux-dits. These non-vintage wines are created using the perpetual reserve method whereby wine from the most recent vintage has cask-aged wines from all previous wines blended in. A portion of this new blend is bottled and the remnants returns to cask for future use. Sous Le Mont is 100% Pinot Noir from Mareuil sur Aÿ and is invitingly soft and elegant.
The NV (2017) Extra-Brut Mareuil-sur-Aÿ Sous Le Mont is exquisite. Exotic and perfumed, the Mareuil is so expressive in this tasting. Kirsch, hard candy, mint, cinnamon and dried flowers open first. More exotic notes of apricot and passion fruit follow. This is a decidedly exotic Sous Le Mont, a wine that begs for a second and third taste. I especially admire its ethereal, elusive personality.
