Henri Giraud Argonne Rosé 2012 is a medium-bodied rosé Champagne from the Äy region of Champagne. Henri Giraud is a long-standing champagne house currently run by thirteenth-generation descendant Emmanuelle Giraud-Patour. The maison owns approximately 10 hectares, mainly planted to Pinot Noir on chalk soils, and also sources fruit from selected growers. Fermented and aged in new oak from the legendary Forest of Argonne, the Argonne rosé is produced in tiny quantities – just 800 bottles per vintage. "This is something else on the nose, with saltines, dried orange, grapefruit, flowers, white pears, peaches, white pepper, rust and five spice. Crazy spice, citrus and rusty minerality. Very fine bubbles. Energy and softness combined. Copper coloured, but otherwise hard to compare to other rosé Champagnes. Savory and intellectual. Unique in the wine world. 90% pinot noir and 10% chardonnay. 800 bottles. Try this if you can." James Suckling, 2022

Henri Giraud

Henri Giraud

The Giraud-Hémart family have cultivated grapes in the Champagne region since 1625. Based in Äy, the family only started to produce wine for themselves in 1990. The current owner of the house is 12th-generation Claude Giraud. His son, Emmanuelle Giraud-Patour manages the company while his son-in-law, Sébastien Le Golvet, is the chef de cave.

Henri Giraud’s top cuvée, Fût de Chêne, is a Pinot Noir-dominant blend with a smaller proportion of Chardonnay, using the ‘Petit Pinot’ clone of Pinot Noir which has been grown solely in Aÿ since 1804. Meanwhile the new Esprit Nature cuvée is a Pinot Noir-dominant blend with Chardonnay and 50% reserve wine, with maturation taking place in small casks and ovoid vats. Production at Henri Giraud is limited to just 250,000 bottles a year – a remarkably small number in comparison with the Grandes Marques, which dictates that demand is always high.
