Gruaud Larose 2008 is a medium- to full-bodied, Cabernet Sauvignon-based red wine from the St-Julien appellation of Bordeaux. Château Gruaud Larose is a Second Growth property located southwest of the village of Beychevelle, within the Saint-Julien appellation. The estate was originally formed in 1757 by Joseph Gruaud and it is currently owned by the Merlaut family. On the 2008 grand vin. "A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 9% Petit Verdot. Moderate intensity on the nose, black fruits, a touch of soot, tobacco and smoke. Good definition but needs to coalesce. The palate is medium-bodied, grainy tannins, nice weight and acidity. Fresh and as always, full of character. The finish has a touch of spice and cedar to it - more Cabernet than usual. This is a restrained but nicely focused Gruaud." Neal Martin, 2009
The 2008 Gruaud Larose has a nose similar to the previous bottle, with tobacco and bay leaf mixed with cedar scents, as I mentioned before, almost Saint-Estèphe in character. The palate is medium-bodied with firmer, more rigid tannins than before, though well balanced with a dash of white pepper. There’s just a bit more grip than previous bottles have demonstrated. This Gruaud Larose is drinking perfectly now. In many ways, it`s a classic claret, but I am not convinced it will repay continued cellaring. Tasted at the Gruaud Larose vertical at the château in February 2023. - Neil Martin - The 2008 Gruaud Larose has a nose similar to the previous bottle, with tobacco and bay leaf mixed with cedar scents, as I mentioned before, almost Saint-Estèphe in character.
