Château Giscours is a Third Growth wine estate situated within the Margaux appellation. The property has been owned by the Albada Jelgersma family since 1995, during which time many improvements in techniques and facilities have been made. This is the 2009 vintage of its flagship wine, a blend composed of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc. The wine is in a great spot right now, boasting notes of cassis, nutmeg, dried plums, olive brine, leather and sandalwood.
The 2009 Giscours has an intense black cherry, plum, boysenberry and crushed violet scents bouquet, a little disjointed at first but it coalesces nicely with aeration. The palate is very sweet and plush on the entry with hints of brown sugar infusing the black fruit. A lot of structure and extract here with a grippy, assertive finish. It needs time in the glass - brutish at the moment but it should mellow with bottle age. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting.
