Cloudy Bay Te Koko 2021 is a distinctive expression of Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand`s Marlborough region. This wine displays complex aromas of ripe stone fruits, herbs and subtle toasty oak. The palate reveals notes of lemon zest and minerality, with a textured mouthfeel and pronounced acidity. Cloudy Bay, established in 1985, is noted for pioneering Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, however Te Koko represents a nuanced departure from its signature style, highlighting a more serious, subtle and complex expression of this variety.
The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc Te Koko is a firm, focused, barrel-fermented style, which is clear from the get-go with its nutty nose that follows through onto the palate. It's a youthful wine with all the flavors up front, and they're all still in a battle for supremacy, from citrus and nectarine to capsicum and almond croissants. The small crops of the season and the winemaking provided a rich texture and grip, making for a structured, powerful wine. There's no shortage of acidity either, coursing through with the pace of a river rapid. This still needs time for its componentry to knit, but there's plenty of quality markers here to suggest it will find its moment.

Cloudy Bay

One of the pioneers of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc in the 1980s, Cloudy Bay has not rested on its laurels – far from it. The company that Aussie winemaker David Hohnen (co-founder of Cape Mentelle) created is now synonymous not only with some of New Zealand’s finest examples of Sauvignon Blanc, but also Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and even traditional-method sparkling wine (see Pelorus).

Cloudy Bay’s winery is based in the Wairau Valley in the northeast of New Zealand's South Island. Most of the estate’s white wine vineyards are located across three sub-regions of the Wairau Valley, where a combination of a cool maritime climate, intense sun exposure and free-draining gravelly soils create wines with a rare vibrancy of flavour.

Cloudy Bay’s barrel-fermented Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc – launched back in 2000 –demonstrated the estate’s restless ability to challenge people’s perception of what to expect from wines of the Marlborough. In addition to its home region, since 2009, the company has also had a presence in Central Otago, where it produces its dark, brooding Te Wahi Pinot Noir.
