`Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Reserve 2011 is a full-bodied red wine produced from organically farmed grapes in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation of the southern Rhône Valley. A blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvedre, the 2011 Reserve is the product of an exceptional vintage and exhibits aromas of strawberry, raspberry blackberry, tobacco and roasted cocoa beans. The palate is voluminous yet elegant, and is dominated by notes of cherry liqueur and wild plum jam, with accents of liquorice and Szichuan pepper.
- (60% grenache and 40% mourvedre): Inky ruby. Heady aromas of red fruit liqueur, lavender, sandalwood and cola, with a smoky mineral topnote. Picks up a darker fruit character with air, showing superb concentration and spicy lift. The floral and cola notes come back strong on the finish, which is framed by smooth, sweet, harmonious tannins. This sexy Chateauneuf was one of the most impressive '11s that I tasted from the southern Rhone this year.
