Run by successive generations of the Avril family, Clos des Papes has a long and illustrious history of producing exceptional wines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with winemaking records dating back to the 17th century. Paul Avril, the grandfather of the current owner, played a key role in establishing the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC in 1936, helping to define the appellation’s strict regulations.

Since 2009, Paul-Vincent Avril has led the estate, continuing its commitment to quality while maintaining a traditional approach. Clos des Papes produces just two wines one red and one white, both of which are limited in quantity and consistently in high demand.

"The classically styled 2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape has plenty of the tell-tale kirsch and sweet spice notes that always seem to be present in Avril`s wines. Showing more mature notes of truffle, olive, liquorice and garrigue as it sat in the glass, it`s medium to full-bodied, elegant and balanced, with a great texture and finish." Wine Advocate, 2015
