Domaine Baron Thenard Chassagne-Montrachet Clos St Jean 2018 is a 1er Cru Burgundy from the Clos St Jean climat in the Côte de Beaune village of Chassagne. Although historically a red wine terroir, Clos St Jean produces excellent, and perhaps occasionally overlooked, examples of fine terroir Chardonnay. Baron Thenard owns just a tiny area of this 1er cru site, producing a maximum of four barrels of Chardonnay in each vintage. The wine is fermented and aged in French oak barrels, barrel, 50% new. From the heatwave 2018 vintage, this wine is buttery and complex, with bright fruit notes of apple, pear, peach and citrus, along with tropical hints. Concentrated but with tension and freshness.
