Domaine Les Mont Fournois Vallee Grand Cru 2014 is produced from a single plot of over 60-year-old vines, a rarity in Champagne’s fragmented landscape. Under the guidance of winemaker Juliette Alips, this vintage showcases a meticulous focus on the unique terroir. It is a testament to the power and elegance of Pinot Noir from the Vallée de la Marne`s Grand Cru sites. This Extra Brut (3.4 g/L dosage) Champagne is built on a foundation of Pinot Noir, showcasing a luminous golden color. On the nose, it offers a complex aromatic palette of red berries (cherry, wild strawberry), stone fruit (apricot, mirabelle plum) and nuanced autolytic notes of toasted brioche, marzipan and subtle spice or tobacco. The palate is aerial yet concentrated, with a creamy texture perfectly balanced by a vibrant, saline acidity that drives a long, pure finish.
The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru puts in a very impressive performance alongside the 2010. With plush red fruit, red cherries intermingling with wild strawberries, this is one of Roumier's most generous Les Cras whilst it retains disarming transparency and precision. The palate is beautifully balanced with crushed stone infusing the red fruit, hints of blood orange and spices. The pixelated finish leaves you just wanting more. This might get even better with continued bottle age. Tasted blind at the Roumier Les Cras vertical at Medlar, London.
