Casa Ferreirinha Barca Velha 1991
The first vintage of Casa Ferreirinha’s flagship wine, Barca Velha, was in 1952 and, having only been released in 19 subsequent vintages, it is one of Portugal’s most highly sought-after red table wines. The 1991 is a stunning release that feels quite different to the modern era wines from the Douro. It is elegant, refined and quietly powerful, with ethereal notes of tobacco, truffle and earth, with deeper, richer and more plummy notes emerging with time in the glass. Silky in texture and with tannins now integrated, it is supremely well-balanced with delicate acidity and still exhibits plenty of life. A rare treat for the curious drinker.
