Puligny-Montrachet Clavoillon
Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France
Located on the lower slopes of the Côte d'Or in the centre of Puligny-Montrachet, Clavoillon (also written as ‘Clavaillon’) is a well-regarded Premier Cru producing elegant, rounded Chardonnay wines. The vineyard is situated to the immediate west of the prized Premier Cru of Les Pucelles, with the Premier Cru of Les Folatières on the hillside just above.
Clavoillon's location at the base of the Côte d’Or escarpment means the terroir differs from the Premier Cru sites higher up. The soil here is deeper with higher proportions of clay. This is reflected in rounder, fatter wines than are produced in the neighbouring crus.
Domaine Leflaive is by far the largest landowner in the appellation. Its plots in Clavoillon have been farmed biodynamically since 1997. The only other producers with holdings in this Premier Cru are Domaine Alain Chavy and Domaine Jean-Louis Chavy.
