Meursault Charmes
Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France
Located at the southern end of the village of Meursault in the Côte de Beaune, Meursault Charmes (often referred to as ‘Charmes’ or ‘Les Charmes’) is one of the best-known – and most-prized – Premier Crus in the Meursault appellation. The vineyard is split into two sections: a higher part (Charmes-Dessus) and a lower one (Charmes-Dessous). Wines made from the stonier higher part are undoubtedly the most sought-after.
The prime terroir of Meursault Charmes has a number of beneficial factors which contribute to the quality and allure of its wines. The vineyard’s soil is deep with alternating layers of gravelly clay and limestone, while its easterly exposition means that in the growing season it catches the best of the morning sun while providing shelter from the intense heat later in the day. These elements yield Chardonnays with a honeyed richness and opulence which makes Meursault Charmes a keen favourite of many white Burgundy lovers.
