Mazis-Chambertin
Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France
The most northerly Grand Cru in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin is located in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, on the same section of slope at the illustrious Chambertin Granc Cru from which it derives its name. Like the Pinot Noirs of Le Chambertin, those of Mazis-Chambertin are concentrated, finely structured and complex, with huge ageing potential. In quality terms, the vineyard is often coupled with Latricières-Chambertin and only slightly behind the great Chambertin itself.
Mazis-Chambertin is split into two lieux-dits: Les Mazis-Bas (the lower section, with deeper soil) and Les Mazis-Hauts (the higher section, with shallower soils that tend to produce livelier wines). The climat is thought to be named after the small houses, known locally as ‘mazis’, which once existed on this land.
