Chambolle-Musigny Les Hauts Doix
Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France
Considering its position right next to the celebrated Premier Cru of Les Amoureuses, Les Hauts Doix should probably be more famous than it is. This tiny (1.7ha) but noteworthy Premier Cru is located between the villages of Chambolle-Musigny and Vougeot and, in the right hands, is capable of producing memorable Pinot Noirs. In recent years, Robert Groffier has emerged as a producer of fine-tuned wines from this terroir. Other producers with plots in this vineyard are Nicolas Potel, Joseph Drouhin and the ‘boutique’ negociant Lucien Le Moine.
The terroir of Les Hauts Doix is strikingly similar to that of Les Amoureuses, with the same pebble-strewn clay-limestone soils. Where Les Hauts Doix differs, however, is in its aspect: roughly north-easterly compared with Les Amoreuses’ south-easterly. This tends to create wines with a little less body than its illustrious Premeier Cru neighbour, though they remain profound examples of Pinot Noir.
