Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers

Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France

The 2.4ha Les Gruenchers is a Premier Cru vineyard in the famed Pinot Noir-growing commune of Chambolle-Musigny. It is one of 24 Premiers Crus within the appellation and is noted for its elegant yet structured Pinot Noirs, including several highly sought-after examples from producers such as Domaine Dujac, Domaine Fourrier and Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair.

Les Gruenchers is located on the northwestern edge of Chambolle-Musigny just below the Grand Cru of Bonnes-Mares. The Premiers Crus of Les Lavrottes, Les Noirots, Les Groseilles and Les Chatelots also surround the vineyard. Though similarly aromatic and fleshy (reflecting a high proportion of clay in the calcareous soil), Les Gruenchers tends to possess a touch more power, arguably reflecting its proximity to Bonnes-Mares.

Not to be confused with the climat of the same in Morey-Saint-Denis, Les Gruenchers takes its name from the Burgundian dialect word ‘grève’, which comes from the Latin ‘grava’, denoting the characteristic scree-covered sand and gravel soils of this part of Burgundy.
