The 1993 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru must be the best that Christophe Roumier produced in the first half of the 1990s, despite my lukewarm reception to two previous bottles over ten years ago! This has a refined bouquet that demonstrated more fruit intensity than the 1994. dark berry fruit, hints of Lapsang Souchong and shucked oyster shells, and cloves emerging with time. The palate is beautifully balanced with great depth and a superb line of acidity. It is quite powerful for a 1993, leaning towards the richer side of the spectrum, with a wonderful saline finish. I would drink this now rather than keep. Tasted at the Roumier vertical in London. - Neil Martin
Domaine Georges Roumier is one of the longest-established estate bottling producers in the Côte D`Or. The domaine was originally formed in 1924 by George Roumier who farmed his own vines in Chambolle-Musigny but also worked as vineyard manager for Comte Georges de Vogüé. Since 1992 the estate has been fully managed by the talented Christophe Roumier, the 3rd generation family winemaker. This release comes from Bonnes-Mares, the prestigious grand cru vineyard where Roumier owns a 1.6-hectare plot. Burgundy 1993 was a successful vintage across the board, with rich and complex red wines.
