House of Hazelwood - The 2024 Collection

The third curation of House of Hazelwood aged, and rare Scotch Whisky pays homage to the adventurous spirit of the Gordon family. With flavours inspired by far-flung destinations, it promises to take the palates of whisky drinkers to rarely traveled plains.

The 2024 Collection represents eight releases - four in the Charles Gordon Collection and four in the Legacy Collection. The latter represents a selection of highlights from the House of Hazelwood's whisky reserves while the former are some of the oldest and rarest casks in the Gordon family's private collection.

The Charles Gordon Collection

A legend within the Scotch whisky community, Charles Gordon was fundamental in managing some of the earliest stock laid down for the House of Hazelwood collection.

This eponymous collection of rare and old Scotch whiskies represents some of the most remarkable stock held within the inventory.

The garden at Hazelwood House has provided a sanctuary and retreat for generations of the Gordon family including Charles Gordon himself who was evacuated there as a child during the Second World War. This wonderfully bright release carries perfumed notes of lavender alongside a generous orchard fruit character reminiscent of the garden itself. Echoes of summers gone by in a special place preserved and protected throughout the generations.

The nose is met with a brush of light lavender, before transitioning into a herbaceous quality, resonant of a bountiful earthy autumn harvest. On the palate, more herbaceous qualities become apparent, bringing with it a sense of freshly cut grass, a cooling breeze of mint, topped with perfumed parma violets and orchard fruits.

With loss, there can also be gains and such is the case with this remarkable malt whisky. Never before have we bottled a whisky that has lost so much of itself through its time in cask. Over fifty years of maturation in American oak, the casks blended to create this release have lost the majority of their contents to the angels, leaving a remarkable spirit in their wake. The Last Trace delivers wonderful contrasts of flavour that move between sweet coconut and earthier, damp notes. A complex, richly flavoursome, shapeshifting release delivering a nuanced character quite unlike anything we have seen before.

The nose opens with the enticing invitation of toasted coconut, evolving to a buttery, yet mentholic quality. From there, the aromas develop, offering plains of leather and parchment paper - a nod to time spent slumbering in cask. The rancio qualities continue on the palate, offering an antique character, before a creamy crescendo, offered hand in hand with a lasting tart tang.

How much can a distillery change its practices over time whilst retaining its identity? From the mashbill to the washbacks, the role of the stillman to the shape of the stills and the very material they were made of, every aspect of the way this whisky was produced has today been consigned to the history books. Carrying a heavier, more aromatic new make character than whisky produced at Girvan today, this rare release has matured majestically to create a full-bodied, mouth-filling whisky of remarkable complexity – a lost style, impossible to recreate again using modern methods.

Aromas of nostalgia are immediately apparent within this Single Grain, with a sense of camping stove burners and wax jackets. The oiliness is complimented by the presence of Muscovado sugar.? The palate carries this sugar sweetness, now developing into stewed rhubarb and gooseberries - a fresh and tart fruit coulis.

While the House of Hazelwood inventory spans every corner of Scotland, perhaps the rarest stocks within our collection are those traded malts from the isle of Islay – known as the Queen of the Hebrides. This rich, savoury, phenolic Blended Malt embodies the character of the island itself, matured to great age in American oak to deliver a wonderfully satisfying mouthfeel, with light tannins and a long finish.

Bonfires burn and smoulder on the nose of this Islay malt. The phenolic, charcoal quality is softened by the presence of yuzu citrus, transforming creosote into bacon in a puff of smoke.? The smoke character develops on the palate, offering up notes of cigar smoke and lightly singed tree bark. Chew your way through the finish on fresh tobacco leaves.
