Tormore
A Lesser Known Distillery
Tormore was one of the first Scottish distillery of the 20th century when it was completed in 1959. The striking granite distillery complex was constructed by Royal Academy architect Sir Albert Richardson and is a listed building.
Drawing its waters from the Allt an Torra Mhoir Burn, Tormore is one of the more obscure Speyside single malt distilleries. This is largely because most of the light, fruity malt it has produced has been destined for previous owners Chivas Brorthers’ proprietary blends (as of 2022, Tormore has been owned by Elixir Distillers).
An initial 12-year-old official Tormore single malt was replaced by 14-year-old and 16-year-old expressions. Independent bottlings are unusual. Maturation of these is mostly in ex-Bourbon casks. In addition, independent bottlings from the likes of Signatory, Cadenhead’s, Douglas Laing and That Boutique-y Whisky Company can be found.
