Glenburgie

A Key Ballantine's Blending Malt

Founded as Kilnflat distillery in Moray 1829, Glenburgie has undergone numerous changes in ownership over its somewhat parenthetical history. Since 2005 it has been owned by Chivas Brothers, who in 2007 took the decision to demolish the original distillery building, replacing it with the larger, open-plan distillery which exists on the site today.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Glenburgie was the source of Glencraig – the short-lived Speyside single malt brand of then-owner Hiram Walker. The small remaining stocks of this whisky are sought-after among single malt aficionados.

As a rule, most Glenburgie single malt has never seen the light of day, having been allocated for use in Ballantine’s blended whiskies. In a rare exception to this rule, however, in 2017 a Glenburgie 15-year-old single malt was released as under the Ballantine’s brand. Glenburgie single malt is also occasionally sighted as an independent bottling, most often that of Gordon & MacPhail.
