Pernand-Vergelesses Sous Frétille
Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France
A well-regarded terroir for fine Chardonnay white wines, Pernand-Vergelesses Sous Frétille was promoted to the ranks of Côte de Beaune Premiers Crus in 2000. The climat of Sous Frétille is located at the top of the Frétille hill in the village of Pernand-Vegelesses, just a stone's throw from Corton-Charlemagne. Here, soils of shallow, stony limestone marls are produces expressive, mineral-streaked and ageworthy Chardonnays which are among the best in this northern section of the côte.
The pronounced slope of Sous Frétille lies just below a wooded area and traditionally is thought to come under the protection of ‘Notre Dame de Bonnes Espérance’ (‘Our Lady of Good Hope’), whose statue overlooks the vineyard. A good number of highly respected producers own parcels here, including Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, Domaine Dugat-Py, Lucien Le Moiune and Domaine Rapet.
