Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru
Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France
There are 20 Premier Cru vineyards covering 143 hectares of vines to the north and south of the Côte de Nuits commune of Nuits-Saint-Georges. The most highly regarded vineyards include Les St Georges, and Clos des Argillières and Clos de la Maréchale in Prémeaux. While Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru is largely devoted to red wines made from Pinot Noir, a small proportion of the appellation’s wines are white, produced from Chardonnay or Pinot Blanc.
The Pinot Noirs of Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru are generally regarded as being sources of good value compared with those of neighbouring communes. In terms of style, they tend to be structured and dark-fruited with good ageing potential. Those from the southern end of the appellation, around Prémeaux, tend to be heavier owing to higher proportions of clay in the soils. Those from the northern end, close to Chambolle-Musigny, are finer and more floral. The best wines, from vineyards such as Les St Georges, for example, are considered by some Burgundy aficionados to be of Grand Cru quality.
