Meursault Les Gouttes d’Or
Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France
The poetically named Les Gouttes d’Or (which means ‘droplets of gold’) is a prized Premier Cru vineyard in the appellation of Meursault in the Côte de Beaune. The vineyard’s name is thought to have been inspired by the flecks of flint which are found in its stony, white marl soils. Les Gouttes d’Or is the closest Premier Cru vineyard to the village of Meursault and consists of a gentle slope at the most northern edge of Meursault’s Premier Cru vineyard sites.
While perhaps not enjoying quite the level of reputation as Meursault’s top-level Premier Crus, Les Charmes, Les Perrières and Les Genevrières, Les Gouttes d’Or is nevertheless very well-regarded – indeed it is said to have been the favourite wine of the Burgundy-loving former US president Thomas Jefferson. Les Gouttes d’Or tends to produce Chardonnay wines with a spicy, floral aroma profile and an opulent, full-bodied palate.
