Griotte-Chambertin
Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France
En Griotte, as it is often called, is located just below the iconic vineyards of Le Chambertin and Clos de Bèze on the Route des Grands Crus. With its stony, pebble-strewn, chalky soils and north-easterly exposition, the vineyard is highly prized by those Gevrey Pinot aficionados who incline towards the more delicate, perfumed expressions.
The 2.6ha vineyard’s exposition dictates that it does not catch quite so much of the sun in the early part of the day during the growing season. Consequently the grapes in this vineyard take longer to ripen than those in neighbouring climats. Owing the small size (it is in fact the smallest of the Gevrey Grands Crus) and relative homogeneity of the vineyard, the delicacy of the resulting wines is more or less consistent irrespective of the producer.
