Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes

Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France

Aux Combottes (also known as Les Combottes) is highly regarded Premier Cru lieu-dit located south of the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. It is the southernmost Premier Cru of Gevrey, bordering Morey-Saint-Denis. Aux Combottes is a relatively small vineyard of just 4.5ha and is sandwiched between the Grands Crus of Latricières-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche.

With slightly deeper soils and a cooler microclimate than the Grand Cru vineyards that surround it (it is in fact the only Burgundy premier cru to be completely surrounded by Grands Crus), Aux Combottes may not carry the same level of reputation as these Grands Crus, however in the hands of some of the best producers – for example Dujac (the largest landowner here), Arlaud and Rossignol-Trapet – a this enviably located climat can produce sensational Pinot Noirs.
