Chassagne-Montrachet Cailleret

Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France

One of the most renowned Premier Cru climats of Chassagne-Montrachet, Cailleret (also known as Les Caillerets) is located on premium mid-slope terroir south of the village of Chassagne in the Côte de Beaune. The vineyard is adjacent to the Grands Crus of Le Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet, with the similarly prized Premier Cru of Les Pucelles immediately below.

The name ‘Cailleret’ derives from the French word for pebbles – ‘cailloux’ – and is a reference to the shallow, stony, chalky soil found in the vineyard. This, combined with an ideal south-easterly exposition on the mid-slope of the Côte d’Or Chassagne-Montrachet Cailleret white wines an excellent balance of richness and mineral freshness. While not quite at the level of Le Montrachet (as reflected in their less stratospheric pricing), these are some of the finest Chardonnays that Burgundy produces.
