Spanish Red Wines

Think Spanish red wine and most thoughts will go to Rioja, perhaps the most well-known internationally of the Spanish red wine regions. While Rioja is certainly worth the fuss, there's far more to Spain than simply Rioja. The grape that forms the backbone of Rioja, Tempranillo, is grown widely throughout the country, including in Ribera del Duero and Toro, two well-established Spanish wine regions.

The Garnachas and Carinenas of Priorat are equally powerful, tannic wines capable of long aging and the Mencias from Bierzo are arguably some of the most interesting reds coming out of the country these days. From the easy drinking and cheerful to some of the highest priced red wines you'll see, the reds of Spain run the gamut, with a lot to be explored.
