French White Wines

From the aromatic Rieslings and Gewurztraminers of Alsace to the rich, age-worthy Chardonnays of Burgundy, France is perhaps just as respected for its white wine production as its red wine. Many of the white grape varieties grown throughout the world originate in France, such as the already mentioned Chardonnay of Burgundy, Bordeaux's Sauvignon Blanc and the Rhone Valley's Viognier.

Since most wines from France are labelled with the name of the appellation rather than the name of the grape variety, it can often be a mystery as to what exactly is in the bottle without a bit of background knowledge. The white wines of France are diverse in variety and style, with a little something for everyone, whether a refreshing crisp Sancerre, a Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley, or a creamy, full-bodied Meursault, a Burgundian Chardonnay, or the many faces in between.
