Abruzzo

Lying to the south of Le Marche and to the north of Puglia, the Abruzzo region is situated on Italy’s eastern coast. In terms of production volume, Abruzzo is notably Italy’s fifth largest region, with co-operatives playing an important role. Vineyards are situated on both hillside sites and on the flatter, coastal sites. A key grape the famous black variety, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, which is used to produce deep coloured red wines, with cherry and black plum character. The variety is also used to make a delightful medium-bodied rosé, Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo. For whites, the Trebbiano (Abruzzese and Toscano) takes centre stage – look out for the golden yellow, ageworthy wines of historic producer, Azienda Agricola Valentini for outstanding varietal examples.
