When Ernst Loosen took over the 200-year-old family estate in 1988, he realised he had ungrafted vines averaging 60 years of age in some of the finest vineyards in the country and recognised the unbelievable potential to create truly world-class Riesling. By dramatically reducing yields, eschewing the use of chemicals and turning to gentler winemaking techniques, he has become one of Germany’s most celebrated producers.
This is a mature, late-harvest Riesling from the red slate soils of the four-acre Erdener Prälat vineyard. With a slightly warmer microclimate due to its south-facing exposure, the grapes here reach greater ripeness levels and produce wines of exceptional complexity and subtle power. This should now be in its peak drinking window.
