Almaviva was established in 1996 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton-Rothschild and Concha y Toro with the singular aim of producing a Bordeaux First Growth equivalent in Chile. Fruit is sourced from 60 hectares of vines located in the Puente Alto subzone of the Maipo Valley – an area identified as perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon with its stony soils, hot days and cool nights.
The 2017 is a sumptuous blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Carmenere, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Merlot, matured in French oak barriques for 19 months. It is laden with concentrated yet juicy black fruit and has a subtle herbal streak throughout. Though perfectly approachable already there is enough underlying power and ample tannin to see this age well for up to 15 years.
