 Bodega Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard River Stones Malbec 2021 is a single-vineyard red wine from the Gualtallary district in the Uco Valley of Mendoza, Argentina. Founded in 1902, Bodega Catena Zapata is perhaps the most famous winery in Argentina and has been at the forefront of resurrecting the Malbec grape variety whilst establishing itself as one of the pre-eminent fine wine producers in the country. This wine takes its name from a small parcel of the revered Adrianna Vineyard that is covered with oval white stones that came from an ancient riverbed. The stones provide excellent drainage and moderate the temperature fluctuations experienced at such high altitude, absorbing heat during the day to be radiated back out during the cooler nights and acting like ice cubes after a particularly cold night. An incredibly age worthy wine in mangum, this should drink beautifully up to and beyond 2040.

 Lafleur 2011 is a mature Bordeaux red wine from the legendary Pomerol estate, Château Lafleur. This 2011 vintage is a blend of roughly equal parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot, sourced from the estate`s gravel-and-clay soils. The 600cl format provides the ideal environment for a slow maturation, allowing the wine`s firm tannins and vibrant acidity to integrate perfectly over decades. It offers a profound bouquet of black cherries, violets and crushed stones, followed by a palate of immense precision and depth. Despite the challenges of the vintage, Lafleur produced a wine of remarkable purity that will outlive standard bottlings by many years.

 Vérité was founded in 1997 by the late visionary Jess Jackson and long-time Bordeaux vigneron, Pierre Seillan. In just over 20 years, the winery has managed to forge a reputation for itself as one of the most consistent producers of elite level fine wine in California. They produce just three wines, La Muse, La Joie and Le Désir, all of which are based on the traditional varieties of Bordeaux.

La Joie is made in the mould of the great wines of Pauillac and the Left Bank. The 2012 is a fruit-laden yet savoury and mineral blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot.

 Screaming Eagle is perhaps the most famous California Cult winery of all time and produces one of the most sought-after wines in the world. Sourced from a small, 57-acre vineyard in Oakville, Napa, production of this exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend is supremely limited and older vintages are increasingly rare. 1997 is possibly one of the finest ever releases and received a perfect 100-point score from wine critic, Robert Parker, Jr. He noted that it had “extraordinary purity, symmetry and a finish that lasts for nearly a minute”. This should be absolutely perfect for drinking now and may well keep for several more years.

The 2014 is another astonishing release of profoundly high quality. Full-bodied, multi-layered and effortlessly balanced, it offers wonderfully complex notes of crème de cassis, black cherry, raspberry liqueur, graphite, cocoa nib, griddled herbs and minerals. Though many releases have vied for perfection this is about as good as Washington State Cabernet gets.

 Sine Qua Non is the creation of pioneering winemaker, Manfred Krankl, and is a world-famous cult winery revered for producing miniscule quantities of unique Rhône-inspired wines from some of the greatest vineyards across the Central Coast. ‘E’ Grenache from the stunning 2015 vintage is a barrel-selection blend with fruit sourced from the estate-owned Eleven Confessions vineyard in Sta. Rita Hills. This is an incredibly complex and full-bodied release, with hedonistic notes of black cherry, raspberry, plum, earth, star anise and dark chocolate. The addition of a small quantity of Petite Sirah gives a more intense, broad-shouldered structure which will aid this wine age superbly well for the next 10-15 years.

It offers deep garnet colour and a profound nose of baked blueberry, blackberry compote and cassis, layered with chocolate and floral lift. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with super fine-grained tannins, real freshness and impressive length despite the wine`s power. This 18-litre Melchior format, hand-blown and rare, suits long-term cellaring and slow evolution. Approachable young, it has decades ahead of it; serve with lamb, duck or mature cheese.
