The 2009 Château Smith Haut Lafitte is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. It stands out as an exceptional wine, opening with fruity notes of cherry and blueberry. As it evolves, earthy tones with a touch of minerals come to the forefront, culminating in a dominant presence of dark chocolate. Overall, a beautifully rounded and mature wine that was awarded a perfect 100-point score by Robert Parker in The Wine Advocate.

One of the vintages that saw Smith Haut Lafitte establish its dominance within the Pessac Léognan appellation, still tasting bright and full of supple, rich berry fruits. Cocoa bean, pencil lead and liqourice showcase the Cabernet dominance, this is confident, generous and just a wonderful wine, still young with many decades ahead of it.Jane Anson23rd June 2022

The 2009 Smith Haut-Lafitte has a very perfumed, quite floral bouquet with violets permeating the black and red fruit, hints of game and leather developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. Touches of brown spice filter through the red fruit and towards a fleshy and lightly peppered finish. This is a classy Pessac-Léognan from the Cathiard's...though, the 2016 is better! Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Neal Martin1st March 2019

This was the wine over which the Cathiards apparently celebrated their 100 Parker points with a reception for the staff, saying it was all up to them. Very dark. Heady. Superripe. Just a bit much. So sweet and with such jagged tannins... (JR)

Organic Winemaking in Pessac-Léognan

Château Smith Haut Lafitte has a long and prestigious history and, since it was acquired by the Cathiard family in 1990, has garnered a reputation as one of the finest producers in Pessac-Léognan. Certified organic since 2019, the estate produces both red and white wines, in addition to a second wine, Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte.

With an estate spanning 80ha, seven red and white grape varieties are planted, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc for reds and Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris for whites. The red wines are generous and juicy, boasting wonderful ageability (and with less oak-dominance from 2010 onwards), whilst the whites offer both superb value and impeccable quality.
