Barolo Monfortino Giacomo Conterno 1998 is a single-vineyard Barolo from the prestigious Monfortino site. Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo, this vintage exhibits a deep crimson hue. The nose reveals aromas of dried roses, leather and earthy notes. On the palate, it presents a concentrated structure of dark cherry and plum, underpinned by mineral nuances and hints of tar. Giacomo Conterno, a historic winery established in the late 19th century, is known for its traditional winemaking methods.

The 1998 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is a monumental effort. A deep dark red, it opens with a huge nose of licorice, roses and cocoa, then flows onto the palate with masses of sweet, concentrated dark fruit that go on forever. Notes of mineral and leather gradually develop in the glass, adding further complexity as this great wine begins to reveal its expansive and profound personality. The 1998 is unusually open right now. As was the case with the 1997 at this stage, it should offer a brief drinking window over the next 6 months or so before shutting down for what is likely to be an extended period prior to awakening in the glorious prime of its life. Anticipated maturity. 2012-2023. - Antonio Galloni

The 1998 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is still young, especially from magnum, but it is a wine that I am enjoying more of late. It really needed a number of years, although it remains raw and not fully complete just yet. Burly, powerful and tannic, the 1998 reminds me a bit of the 1995 in that it is a Monfortino that still needs bottle age to be at its most expressive. Antonio Galloni1st February 2021

Time and Tradition

Founded in the 1920s, Giacomo Conterno is an iconic Piedmont estate currently owned and operated by Roberto, grandson of winery founder and namesake. Giacomo was assisted by his brother Aldo Conterno for many years before Aldo left to establish his own eponymous winery, pursuing a different style of winemaking altogether.

Along with Gaja and Bruno Giacosa, the winery is considered to be one of the premier producers of fine Barolo. Cascina Francia and Monfortino (only made in select vintages and aged for up to seven years before release) are Conterno's top wines when it comes to Nebbiolo, but the team also make excellent Barbera a'Alba. The Nebbiolo are traditional expressions of the Piedmont terroir in many ways - long-lived and earthy with an elegant savoury character to match alluring ripe red and black fruit notes.
