The Barolos of Giacomo Conterno are renowned for their extraordinary combination of power, subtlety and longevity, and to many represent the apogee of Italian fine wines. Giacomo Conterno produced Barolo Monfortino for the first time in 1934. It was the first Barolo wine to be made in what is now considered the `classic` style. To many aficionados, it is the ultimate expression of Nebbiolo.
100 Vinous
Arguably the most profound wine made here, the 1978 Monfortino is highly anticipated. Still virile and imposing, the 1978 stains the palate with dark plum, graphite, incense, scorched earth and balsamic, mentholated notes. A Barolo of magnificent depth and structure, the 1978 Monfortino captures this historic vintage at its best. Interestingly, the 1978 was made from vines that were just four years old. It was also the first vintage Conterno made from their Cascina Francia vineyard, which they acquired in 1974. Antonio Galloni18th December 2025

Time and Tradition

Founded in the 1920s, Giacomo Conterno is an iconic Piedmont estate currently owned and operated by Roberto, grandson of winery founder and namesake. Giacomo was assisted by his brother Aldo Conterno for many years before Aldo left to establish his own eponymous winery, pursuing a different style of winemaking altogether.

Along with Gaja and Bruno Giacosa, the winery is considered to be one of the premier producers of fine Barolo. Cascina Francia and Monfortino (only made in select vintages and aged for up to seven years before release) are Conterno's top wines when it comes to Nebbiolo, but the team also make excellent Barbera a'Alba. The Nebbiolo are traditional expressions of the Piedmont terroir in many ways - long-lived and earthy with an elegant savoury character to match alluring ripe red and black fruit notes.
