Barolo Francia Giacomo Conterno 2020 is a Barolo crafted from the Nebbiolo grape, sourced exclusively from the renowned Francia vineyard in Serralunga d`Alba. Known for its exceptional terroir, the vineyard`s unique soil composition contributes to the wine`s distinct character. This vintage underwent approximately 42 months of maturation in large Austrian oak barrels, allowing for nuanced development. The wine displays pronounced notes of cherry, rose and earthy complexities, alongside firm tannins and a robust structure.

The 2020 Barolo Francia is fascinating to taste next to the 2021. A substantial young Barolo, the 2020 offers notable mid-palate density and tons of pure explosive energy. Savory and mineral notes abound, but at this stage, the 2020 is a Barolo of fruit and texture. Practically seamless tannins pull it all together. I have a slight preference for the 2021, but it is neck and neck between these two great Barolos. A second bottle enjoyed in a local restaurant a few days after this tasting was every bit as memorable.Antonio Galloni1st January 2025

The Giacomo Conterno 2020 Barolo Francia shows balance and elegance with an especially mineral character that is specific to this wine. Red and blue fruit aromas add hints of sweetness, but the bouquet quickly moves to iron ore and dusty ferrous notes. Of these three single-vineyard Barolos, Arione has the finesse, Cerretta has volume and structured tannins and Francia, well, has an even greater sense of tannic intensity. These are age-worthy tannins that still feel quite firm and compact and will need more time to resolve.

Time and Tradition

Founded in the 1920s, Giacomo Conterno is an iconic Piedmont estate currently owned and operated by Roberto, grandson of winery founder and namesake. Giacomo was assisted by his brother Aldo Conterno for many years before Aldo left to establish his own eponymous winery, pursuing a different style of winemaking altogether.

Along with Gaja and Bruno Giacosa, the winery is considered to be one of the premier producers of fine Barolo. Cascina Francia and Monfortino (only made in select vintages and aged for up to seven years before release) are Conterno's top wines when it comes to Nebbiolo, but the team also make excellent Barbera a'Alba. The Nebbiolo are traditional expressions of the Piedmont terroir in many ways - long-lived and earthy with an elegant savoury character to match alluring ripe red and black fruit notes.
