Tasted blind in Hong Kong, the Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Malconsorts 2004 does everything to convince me that I had this brilliant wine correct when I tasted it from barrel. Deep in colour, there is an initial burst of red berry fruit intermingling with shaved black truffle and cigar box, a little autumnal perhaps, but very well defined. The palate has real guts and substance, the new oak melded into the fabric of the wine, silky smooth in texture with a vitamin-like purity toward the energetic finish. What a great les Malconsorts from Cathaird. You can see it lasting two decades without too much problem.Neal Martin30th April 2015

Palish medium red. Raspberry, minerals, flowers and nutty oak on the nose. More aromatic than the Orveaux but still a bit unforthcoming. Then sweet, creamy and pliant in the mouth, with lovely sneaky depth of raspberry and floral flavor. Supple and long for the vintage, finishing with a suggestion of chocolatey oak. I'd give this three or four years in the cellar.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2007

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard

This small, family run domaine was first established in the commune of Vosne-Romanée in Burgundy by Sylvain Cathiard’s grandfather. Since 2011, following the retirement of Sylvain, the domaine has been run by Sylvain's son, Sébastien Cathiard. Famed for the superb quality Pinot Noir it produces, the domaine has vineyard holdings across Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-St-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny, in addition to tiny holdings in Clos Vougeot and Romanée-St-Vivant.

In the words of esteemed critic, Neal Martin, "“Do I need to tell you how much I adore Sylvain Cathiard’s wines? This is a seriously good quality producer of Vosne-Romanée, one whose star is in the ascendant. These are gloriously silky smooth, complex wines; not just with the top Premier Crus but down to the generic Burgundy. It’s the intensity and focus that set Cathiard apart, wines with supreme definition and purity that seduce the palate like a beautiful courtesan. I would love to taste his Grand Crus, but they are incredibly rare and sought-after. This producer comes highly recommended from top to bottom.”
