La Grande Dame is a tribute to the inspiring Madame Clicquot. The 2008 is a blend of 92% Pinot Noir and 8% Chardonnay and is a fine balance of power and elegance. The nose is alive with fig, apricot, almond, hazelnut and pear aromas. The palate is pure and precise, hallmarked by the freshness, minerality and power of Pinot.
16.5 Jancis Robinson
92% Pinot Noir from Aÿ, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzy and Verzenay plus 8% Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Aged for 10 years with a final dosage of 6 g/l. Chef de cave Dominique Demarville says his aim is to express `the finesse and elegance that the Pinot Noir offers us in these Grands Crus ... to combine depth and silkiness with lightness and elegance.` Still very taut indeed. I would not choose to drink this yet. The acidity of the vintage is still the dominant characteristic. In fact, if I had to serve this now, I might even consider decanting it. There`s a lot there, and it`s admirably persistent, but for the moment it seems buried. Nothing like the opulence of Dom Pérignon 2008, also from LVMH, but perhaps this is deliberate positioning? Admirably long. (JR)

The 'Grande Dame' of Champagne

Founded in Reims in 1772, Veuve Clicquot is one of the largest Champagne houses. The famous Madame Clicquot is credited with many innovations during her tenure as head of the house in the early 1800s - introducing vintage-dated Champagne, inventing the process of riddling to ensure a clearer wine and developing the rosé Champagne produced through blending. Madame Clicquot is also credited with helping to popularise Champagne with high society in Europe during the Napoleonic wars.

The non-vintage is fresh and crisp with ripe fruit balancing citrussy zing while the vintage offerings are richer, fuller and more complex with notes of toasted brioche, almond and crushed green apple. La Grande Dame is the house's prestige cuvée - made only in exceptional years, the Champagne is produced using wines selected from Veuve Clicquot's Grand Cru vineyard holdings.
