Conceived in 1972 to commemorate the bicentennial of the House, La Grande Dame pays homage to Madame Clicquot, affectionately known as `La Grande Dame de la Champagne.` Serving as Veuve Clicquot`s prestigious cuvée, it represents an exclusive amalgamation of eight of their historic Grand Crus, delivering a mineral-rich and fresh embodiment of the Veuve Clicquot style. The 2004 vintage comprises a blend of 61% Pinot Noir and 39% Chardonnay, undergoing a lengthy 8-year maturation on the lees. This release marked the return of `La Grande Dame` after a hiatus since 1998.

(made from fruit grown in eight different grand crus, mostly Verzenay and Avize; lot 5122815): Vivid gold. Heady aromas of orange, white peach and smoky minerals, with a note of buttered toast adding depth. Densely packed citrus and pit fruit flavors show chewy texture and a bright mineral quality that adds vivacity. Rich but lively and precise, finishing very long, with notes of candied fig and toasty lees.Josh Raynolds1st November 2013

The 'Grande Dame' of Champagne

Founded in Reims in 1772, Veuve Clicquot is one of the largest Champagne houses. The famous Madame Clicquot is credited with many innovations during her tenure as head of the house in the early 1800s - introducing vintage-dated Champagne, inventing the process of riddling to ensure a clearer wine and developing the rosé Champagne produced through blending. Madame Clicquot is also credited with helping to popularise Champagne with high society in Europe during the Napoleonic wars.

The non-vintage is fresh and crisp with ripe fruit balancing citrussy zing while the vintage offerings are richer, fuller and more complex with notes of toasted brioche, almond and crushed green apple. La Grande Dame is the house's prestige cuvée - made only in exceptional years, the Champagne is produced using wines selected from Veuve Clicquot's Grand Cru vineyard holdings.
