Vérité was founded in 1997 by the late visionary Jess Jackson and long-time Bordeaux vigneron, Pierre Seillan. In just over 20 years, the winery has managed to forge a reputation for itself as one of the most consistent producers of elite level fine wine in California. They produce just three wines, La Muse, La Joie and Le Désir, all of which are based on the traditional varieties of Bordeaux.

Le Désir is inspired by the wines of St-Émilion and is a celebration of Cabernet Franc. To that end, the 2009 is composed of 74% Cabernet Franc, 13% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Malbec. It is harmonious, silky and refined, with immense mineral complexity and superb underlying power.

Bright dark ruby. Distinctly wild aromas of blackberry, minerals, game and leather, plus a whiff of Band-Aid. Dense, powerful, Cabernet Franc-dominated wine with vibrant, downright penetrating black fruit and licorice flavors. Fairly thick but still tight in the middle palate, with flavors similar to the aromas. Finishes with slightly edgy, building tannins that saturate the front teeth and incisors. Twenty-four hours in the recorked bottle brought a somewhat plusher texture and more breadth, but the leathery quality still impinged on the wine's fruit, limiting its complexity. While the wine's superb density of grain is undeniable, there's ultimately a bit too much Old World funk for me. I tasted two similar bottles. (14.5% alcohol)Stephen Tanzer1st July 2019

Bordeaux via Sonoma County

A true visionary, Jess Jackson’s lengthy career, which spanned more than 30 years, was driven by a passion for producing extraordinary wine from California’s best vineyards. Jackson had longed to create a wine that would be just as good as the world’s best wines and was confident that the terroir in Sonoma County had that potential. Teaming up with Bordeaux winemaker Pierre Seillan, the duo created Vérité - a project with the aim of making some of the world's greatest Cabernet Sauvignon.

As Pierre approaches retirement, the reins are being passed to his daughter Hélène Seillan, who grew up in Sonoma County and Saint-Émilion, studying Viticulture and Oneology at the Institut Rural de Vayres in Bordeaux. Hélène is set to build on the work of her father and Jess Jackson - crafting Bordeaux-inspired Cabernet with poise and precision.
