Smith Haut Lafitte 2015 is a full-bodied Graves Bordeaux blend crafted by Daniel and Florence Cathiard, reflecting their commitment to quality since their acquisition of the property in the early 1990s. This vintage blends 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The winery’s 67-hectare estate benefits from soils of gravel and clay, which influence the wine`s structure and overall character. The 2015 edition, with a deep ruby colour, showcases notes of dark fruits, subtle oak and earthy undertones. Acidity balances the rich fruit, offering a structured yet elegant palate.

This vintage is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, matured in 65% new oak barrels. Medium to deep garnet-purple, the 2015 Smith Haut Lafitte has a totally dazzling nose of exotic spices—star anise, fenugreek and Sichuan pepper—over a core of chocolate-covered cherries, wild blueberries, plum preserves, violets and earthy wafts of truffles, moss, tilled black soil and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced and packing a lot of flavor into a relatively modest package, it fills the mouth with spice and herb-laced black and blue fruit layers, supported by very ripe, very finely grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length. This is already a show-stopping, heart-pounding beauty, but should also age incredibly! - Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2015 Smith Haut-Lafitte has an ebullient bouquet with luscious black cherry, blueberry and tobacco scents that soar from the glass. Its nose says "party time"! The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins that frame the layered black, slightly toasty fruit. With fine focus, grip and a liberal sprinkling of black pepper on the bravura finish, this is a Smith Haut-Lafite that demands attention. Excellent. Neal Martin3rd June 2025

A good vintage in Pessac Léognan, as on the Right Bank, confirming how often these two areas succeed together. Ripe fruits, a little candied, with sweet blueberry, raspberry pastille, black chocolate and crushed rocks, given lift and focus by rose petal and violet edges. Enjoyable, in its drinking window already but can age from here. 80% new oak, Fabien Teitgen technical director.Jane Anson31st March 2026

Tasted blind. Concentrated garnet. The nose is somehow a bit fractured (doesn’t hang together). Very extracted and insistent. Dense and ambitious but a bit overdone. Grainy tannins on the end. (JR)Jancis Robinson13th February 2025

Organic Winemaking in Pessac-Léognan

Château Smith Haut Lafitte has a long and prestigious history and, since it was acquired by the Cathiard family in 1990, has garnered a reputation as one of the finest producers in Pessac-Léognan. Certified organic since 2019, the estate produces both red and white wines, in addition to a second wine, Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte.

With an estate spanning 80ha, seven red and white grape varieties are planted, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc for reds and Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris for whites. The red wines are generous and juicy, boasting wonderful ageability (and with less oak-dominance from 2010 onwards), whilst the whites offer both superb value and impeccable quality.
