Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2012 is a red wine from the Pessac-Léognan region of Bordeaux. This estate is a leader in biodynamic practices in the Graves, and the 2012 vintage highlights a style of great aromatic purity and textural softness. It offers a profile of smoke, black cherries and liquorice, supported by an underlying mineral thread. The tannins are ripe and well-integrated, reflecting the estate`s use of high-tech optical sorting and gentle vinification. It is a sophisticated and approachable red that perfectly balances the savoury, earthy character of Pessac with a succulent core of dark fruit.

The 2012 Smith Haut Lafitte Rouge is medium to deep garnet-purple colored. It sashays out with flamboyant scents of boysenberries, blackberry preserves, and redcurrant jelly, plus hints of cardamom, cigar box, and fragrant earth. Medium to full-bodied, elegant, and with seamless freshness, it has provocative black and red berry flavors and minerally sparks on the long, plush finish.Lisa Perrotti-Brown16th February 2023

The 2012 Smith Haut Lafitte has an intense, well-defined and quite complex bouquet with blackberry, briary and cigar humidor scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, cohesive and poised with quite a firm grip towards the finish. This is another classy Pessac-Léognan and a wonderful example from Pessac-Léognan that might well be leading the pack at this stage. Bon vin. Tasted twice at Bordeaux Index's Ten Year-On tasting and blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. Neal Martin27th September 2022

At this point Smith Haut-Lafittte was leaping up in renown after their excellent 2009 and 2010 vintages, and they deliver here glamour and poise and depth of expression - particularly impressive in a vintage where that wasn't a given. Tannins still firm at this point, you can drink it now but it will soften further over the next two to three years. Great quality poise and character.Jane Anson30th March 2022

Organic Winemaking in Pessac-Léognan

Château Smith Haut Lafitte has a long and prestigious history and, since it was acquired by the Cathiard family in 1990, has garnered a reputation as one of the finest producers in Pessac-Léognan. Certified organic since 2019, the estate produces both red and white wines, in addition to a second wine, Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte.

With an estate spanning 80ha, seven red and white grape varieties are planted, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc for reds and Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris for whites. The red wines are generous and juicy, boasting wonderful ageability (and with less oak-dominance from 2010 onwards), whilst the whites offer both superb value and impeccable quality.
