The Smith Haut Lafitte 2008 presents a structured Left Bank Bordeaux profile characteristic of the Graves region. This vintage features a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, aged in predominantly new oak barrels to impart complexity. Aromas of blackcurrant, cedar and earthy undertones emerge on the nose. The palate reveals a firm tannin structure complemented by notes of graphite and subtle spice. Smith Haut Lafitte is renowned for its tradition of biodynamic viticulture, showcasing a commitment to environmental sustainability. A meticulous expression of both terroir and vintage.

The 2008 Smith Haut Lafitte is a lovely wine for the vintage, still quite polished on the nose with scents of blackcurrant and raspberry coulis, a touch of melted tar and tobacco; youthful for its age and showing fine vigor. With aeration there is suddenly a strong scent of liquorice. The palate is soft and rounded on the entry however, there is great depth on the mid-palate with layers of slightly toasted black fruit laced with tobacco, black pepper and smoke. I just felt there is a little dryness creeping in towards the finish, nevertheless this is a fine Pessac-Léognan. (Tasted at the château and at BI Wine & Spirit’s annual vertical tasting.)

Organic Winemaking in Pessac-Léognan

Château Smith Haut Lafitte has a long and prestigious history and, since it was acquired by the Cathiard family in 1990, has garnered a reputation as one of the finest producers in Pessac-Léognan. Certified organic since 2019, the estate produces both red and white wines, in addition to a second wine, Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte.

With an estate spanning 80ha, seven red and white grape varieties are planted, namely Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc for reds and Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris for whites. The red wines are generous and juicy, boasting wonderful ageability (and with less oak-dominance from 2010 onwards), whilst the whites offer both superb value and impeccable quality.
