Domaine de la Romanée-Conti – or simply DRC – is the legendary Burgundy estate that produces some of the most exclusive and sought-after wines in the world. The estate has a fascinating heritage that goes all the way back to the 16th century, when it was farmed by the Benedictine monks of Saint-Vivant de Vergy. Only grand cru wines are produced here, including this Richebourg cuvée, made from a 3.51-hectare parcel. The 2009 vintage displays a rich, concentrated nose of black fruits, espresso, smoke, rose petals and limestone mineral. The palate is multi-layered, with mineral acidity and a sweet, black fruit finish.

Very dark indeed. Very rich and sumptuous nose. The epitome of richness. In 2009 this seems more obviously rich than the Romanée-St-Vivant. Certainly on the nose. Then it lifts itself out of its wallow in ripe fruit to dance on the palate. The huge intensity of ripe fruit just fails to hide the massive charge of tannins here. Very refreshing on the finish. Not a heavyweight but very entrancing. More obvious sweetness here than on the Romanée-St-Vivant. (JR)Jancis Robinson7th December 2011
