Domaine Leroy was formed in 1988 when Lalou Bize-Leroy acquired the estate of Charles Noëllat in Vosne-Romanée and subsequently Philippe-Rémy’s property in Gevrey-Chambertin. Today, Domaine Leroy owns approximately 23 hectares, including impressive holdings in nine Grands Crus and eight Premier Crus. It is the 2nd largest owner of Richebourg – after Domaine de la Romanée-Conti – with approximately 0.78 hectares of vines. The 2007 vintage is a real showstopper, offering notes of black fruits, violets and spice, with an added earthiness of mushroom and beef stock that is both moreish and warming.

Good deep medium red. Locked up tight on the nose. Tight on entry, then juicy, compressed and extremely young in the middle palate, with a powerful minerality and firm acidity combining to keep the wine's sharply delineated fruit and mineral flavors under wraps. This classic Richebourg is most impressive today on its slowly mounting, very long and gripping back end. (Incidentally, in my early look at the Leroy 2008s, I preferred the Richebourg to the Romanee-Saint-Vivant, but not in 2007.)Stephen Tanzer1st March 2010

Burgundian Royalty

The Leroy name is a key pillar of the Burgundian wine scene and a leading light in the Côte d'Or, with three main strands: Domaine Leroy, Maison Leroy and Domaine d'Auvenay (a small, biodynamically farmed Domaine founded by Lalou in 1988).

In 1988, recognising the trend towards domaine bottling in Burgundy, Lalou Bize-Leroy purchased what would become Domaine Leroy: an estate situated in Vosne-Romanée (previously known by the name Domaine Noëllat). Domaine Leroy labelled wines are thus are produced from parcels of grapes grown on the 22ha of domaine-owned Côte d'Or vineyards, which span nine different Grand Crus. These wines are produced biodynamically and at extremely low yields, resulting in superbly concentrated expressions of the Burgundian terroir.
