Peter Michael Point Rouge Chardonnay 2009 offers a complex aromatic profile, featuring notes of citrus zest, white peach and hints of ginger. Underneath, the wine reveals deeper layers of toasty oak and a subtle creaminess from malolactic fermentation. The palate displays a refined balance of lemon and grapefruit flavours, complemented by a minerally backbone that adds structure. The finish is precise with lingering nuances of almond and fresh herbs. Peter Michael Winery, established in 1980, is known for its commitment to small-lot winemaking and meticulous vineyard practices.

Hazy gold. High-pitched aromas of citrus zest, white flowers and quince, with deeper notes of toasty lees and honey adding power. Densely packed lemon curd and orchard fruit flavors are underscored by a zesty mineral quality and show impressive precision. The minerality dominates the long, chewy, finely etched finish, which leaves a sexy floral note behind. This should age slowly; Nic Morlet told me that he left just one cluster of grapes per chardonnay shoot in 2009 and that almost no sulfur was used to make this wine.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2011

Inspired by the Médoc and Côte d'Or

Peter Michael Winery was founded by British businessman Sir Peter Michael in the early 1980s with a singular vision - to make wine in the terroir-driven tradition of Burgundy and Bordeaux, under the California sun and in California soil. The winery currently produce around fifteen wines using four varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Consistency and quality are the watchwords here - the wines are clearly inspired by the poise and precision of their Old World counterparts but can't help expressing an edge of Californian excess - ripe fruit abounds on the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir while the Cabernet Sauvignons have a density and concentration that many Bordelais would envy.
