Tenuta dell`Ornellaia Ornellaia 2008 is a mature, full-bodied `Supertuscan` Bordeaux blend from the Antinori family. Since the foundation of the estate in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, Ornellaia has shown remarkable consistency and is now rightly considered one of the great Italian red wines. Famed for this Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Supertuscan wine (blended with a smaller percentage of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot), Tenuta dell`Ornellaia is located near Bolgheri in Tuscany, on the Mediterranean coast. "I must admit my personal preference for Ornellaia with a majority of Cabernets, and where Merlot is kept below 30% – as in this 2008 (54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot). Olga Fusari mentioned ‘several mistakes done in that harvest,’ but today this is a delicious wine. clove, cedar and leather aromas are accompanied by elegant freshness of small dark fruits in depth. The palate is full of liquorice, oak bark, wild fennel and helichrysum – exquisitely Mediterranean. The tannins are resolved and condensed, with lifted freshness and a polished finish. A very energetic kind of evolution." Decanter, 2023
A muscular Ornellaia at 15 years old, filled with toasted and grilled cedar and sandalwood notes. Powerful and vibrant, with black cherry and blackcurrant fruits, edged with liqourice, balsamic, spice and fennel, delivering plenty of umami texture and character. Even now I would suggest that it can benefit from a little longer in bottle, or ensure a good long carafe. This was the year that Olga Fusari joined the team fully as winemaker, working alongside Axel Heinz. Harvest September 2 to October 7, after a growing season with a cool and rainy spring, then intense heat over the summer. 70% new oak.Jane Anson3rd October 2023

A Legendary Super Tuscan
Founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, the wines of the Ornellaia estate show remarkable consistency and are rightly considered an Italian great. Famed for its legendary Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Super Tuscan wine (blended with a smaller percentage of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot), the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia lies near Bolgheri in Tuscany, on the Mediterranean coast. Renowned winemaker Axel Heinz was first appointed in 2002.
Starting with the release of the 2006 vintage in 2009, Ornellaia has produced the highly coveted Vendemmia d'Artista series; a celebration of the unique character of each new vintage in which a contemporary artist creates a work of art and a series of limited edition labels drawing inspiration from the single word chosen by the winemaker to describe the character of the new vintage. Celebrated contemporary artists have included Shirin Neshat, William Kentridge and Ernesto Neto.
The Ornellaia estate also produces a beautiful white wine, Ornellaia Bianco, which is a white blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier; the superb Sauvignon Blanc-dominant Poggio alle Gazze; a beautiful red Mediterranean expression known as Le Volte dell'Ornellaia; the 'second' red wine, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia and a late harvest Petit Manseng sweet wine known as Ornus.
