Lucien Le Moine Nuits St Georges Les Vaucrains 2008 is a full-bodied red Burgundy from the Premier Cru climat of Les Vaucrains in the commune of Nuits St Georges in the Côte de Nuits. Essentially a boutique micro-negociant producing only 1ers and Grands Crus, husband and wife team Mounir and Rotem Saouma craft a broad yet extremely limited range of highly sought-after wines using traditional, low-intervention methods of elevage (minimal racking, no fining or filtration, minimal sulphur, working by gravity). "The two barrels of Le Moine 2008 Nuits St.-Georges Les Vaucrains are memorably scented with game, smoky-sweet machine oil, hibiscus, heliotrope, and black raspberry preserves, which then inform a rich yet brightly and beautifully focused palate, leading to a finish of cut and complexity, its animal and mineral dimensions as fascinating as they are hard to pin-down in words. Overall, this silken-textured cru is more forward and winsome than its Les St.-Georges counterpart, and while I would not be surprised if it rewards two decades of cellaring, I suspect it will not insist on bottle aging." Good full red. Musky aromas of maraschino cherry, chocolate and minerals; very ripe and pure. Then fruity and suave in the mouth, with plenty of black cherry sweetness to support its firm tannic structure. Subtle minerality gives definition to the sweet, long finish.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2010

A Boutique Négociant

Founded by Mounir and Rotem Saouma in the late 1990s, Lucien Le Moine is a small, quality focussed négociant that bottle wines from some of the greatest Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. The team aim to bottle around 100 barrels each vintage, which can sometimes represent over 60 different wines. There are no contracts with the growers and no winemaking requirements from Lucien Le Moine beyond the stipulation that the wines be of the highest possible quality.

The wines arrive with Lucien Le Moine fully vinified and Rotem and Mounir focus solely on élévage, racking the wines into new oak barrels made to their own particular specifications. It's tricky to generalise across dozens of wines from many different crus, but both the whites and reds tend towards the generous with a ripeness of fruit and a fullness of body that is rare in the Côte d'Or.
