Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St Georges Clos des Fourches 2007 is a full-bodied red Burgundy from the Nuits St Georges commune of the Côte de Nuits. Clos des Fourches is, in effect, the second wine of the monopole of Clos de la Maréchale. JF Mugnier revived the name of Clos des Fourches (the old name for Maréchale) for a cuvée made from the younger vines of the clos in specific vintages. "The nose offer deep red and dark berry fruit powered by a nice deep earthy minerality. On the palate surprising weight and somehow a darker fruit than expected – have not tasted Maréchale 2007 in years though. It’s a very robust and intense 2007 – rather unevolved – but yet with the Mugnier finesse. Many 2007s are unfolding beautifully now with forward red fruit – this I would prefer to cellar for 5 years to let it unfold its Mugnier magic." Winehog, 2016

Good deep red. Very fresh, pure aromas of blackberry and violet. Sweet on entry, then a bit firmer and more minerally in the middle. Turns a tad tough on the end, finishing with dusty tannins. The 2006 version of this village offering was mostly from the young vines in the northern portion of the Clos de la Marechale but this 2007 is mostly from the upper part of the vineyard.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2010

Precision and Beauty

Located the famous Château de Chambolle-Musigny, which has been owned by the Mugniers since the mid 19th century, Frédéric Mugnier took the hem at the family winery in 1985. Frédéric farms around 35 acres of vines, including plantings in some of Burgundy's most desirable crus, most notably the famous Les Amoureuses Premier Cru and Musigny Grand Cru. A notable recent addition to the portfolio is Clos de la Maréchale in Nuits-St-George, returned to the family stable after a 54 lease to Domaine Faiveley.

The winemaking is methodical and reasoned, reflecting Frédéric's training as an engineer - all fruit is destemmed before crushing, new oak is limited to 25% and all wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bucking the trend somewhat, Frédéric has decided not to pursue organic or biodynamic certification. While pesticide and herbicide-free since the mid-1990s, the domaine take a pragmatic approach to vineyard management rather than a dogmatic one.
