78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Malbec, this outstanding Argentinian blend uses de-stemmed, whole berry fruit which is hand-loaded into 225-500 litre new French oak foudres for a 100% barrel fermentation for a period of 18 days, allowing seamless oak integration. A glorious profile of blackberry and blackcurrant, together with liquorice and earthy complexity. Describing the 2004 vintage, Robert Parker`s Wine Advocate writes, "It strikes me as being Argentina’s equivalent of a great vintage of Lafite-Rothschild.”

Softened to a sunset brick colour at 20 years old, grilled and smoky turmeric spice on the opening, this has a generosity and warmth to it that is totally delicious. Waves of blackberry and olive pit, oak influence still in evidence, giving campfire notes that weave through the fine tannic frame. 80% new oak for ageing.Jane Anson29th August 2024

(14% alcohol; 5.8 g/l acidity; 3.72 pH): Full medium red. Vibrant, expressive scents of cassis, black cherry, licorice and violet. Densely packed and quite firmly built, conveying terrific juicy intensity and a restrained sweetness to its youthful dark fruit flavors. Some peppery acidity gives this very penetrating wine a slight leanness. With its firm vertebral column, this wine still needs time to gain in pliancy. Incidentally, this was the first vintage of the Nicolás Catena Zapata to include some Malbec vinified with whole clusters, and that no doubt explains its peppery element.Stephen Tanzer1st October 2016

78% Cabernet, 22% Malbec selected from Catena Zapata’s best vineyards. 24 months in 100% new French oak. Black and inky, rich and deliciously savoury. Well built but still subtle, with the ability to dance lightly across the palate.  (JH)

Pioneers of Fine Winemaking in Argentina

Over more than a century, the Catenas have evolved into the pre-eminent winemaking family in Argentina. The family’s history in wine goes back to 1902 when Nicola Catena purchased his first Mendoza vineyard. Much more recently, in 1997, his grandson, Nicolás Zapata pioneered the idea of fine wine from Argentina. Inspired by Bordeaux and Napa, he was the first person to ally Old World winemaking sensibilities to the high-altitude vineyards of Mendoza.

Bodega Catena Zapata is now managed by (Dr) Laura Catena, who continues to uphold the the family’s standard of excellence, harnessing the high-altitude terroir of the Andes through precision viticulture and a highly granular cellar regime to produce one of the finest wine portfolios in Argentina.

The flagship wine of the Catena portfolio is the Nicolás Catena Zapata cuvée in which ungrafted Malbec is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon from ‘grand cru’ multiple plots, all processed via 200 micro-vinifications which are then blended together and matured for 24 months in French oak, with a further two years in bottle before release.
