Mazy-Chambertin 2009 from Joseph Roty is a Grand Cru red wine from the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation of Burgundy. Sourced from vines planted in the early 20th century, this northerly site thrives in the warmth of the 2009 vintage. The shallow, stony soils of Mazy provide a particular aromatic intensity that complements Roty`s preference for late harvesting and significant new oak. The result is a rich, velvety Pinot Noir with layers of black cherry and roasted meats. This wine showcases the power of old-vine concentration combined with a generous growing season, resulting in a Grand Cru that possesses both the structural weight for long ageing and the opulent fruit profile characteristic of the Roty domain.

Good full red. Wild, scented nose offers currant, cherry, dried rose and game. Juicy, brisk and delineated, showing a distinctly imploded quality to the red raspberry, mocha and floral flavors. Firmly tannic but not hard, finishing with superb rising length and lovely perfume. Dense, concentrated and in need of patience.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2012
